About this piece

This Pretty Little Me oil painting gave me an opportunity to play more with light and soft shadows with my trusty palette knife.

I wanted to create a softness that radiated from the little ballerina’s innocence. She forms part of a series of my mini artworks, and Yellow in Play oil painting forms part of this fun collection.

It’s not the first time that I play around with a ballerina theme. I tried painting ballerina shoes and after my second attempt, I finally got the desired effect I was yearning for. As you can see, the ballerina depicted is striking a pose, confidently showing off her new skills. The image made me think of how children have a sense of pride in what they do or they like and nothing can take that away from them. Their love for whatever they do is inspiring to me. Often, as adults, we are afraid to take a stand or be proud of what tickles our fancy. We are afraid of what others may think.

Our love for our passion is often diluted by the worry that others may not approve of. In the end, we are driven by that fear, not to succeed, but we are pushed to conform to the plan other people have for OUR lives. In my opinion, that’s pretty messed up and terribly sad. Funny thing is, most of the time we are not even aware of these beliefs we hold close to our hearts.

Who cares if someone doesn’t think you’ll be a great ballet dancer or artist?

YOU approve!

You make the rules!

Children have no fear. It’s a learned behaviour.

Imagine what you could do or achieve if you had no fear lurking around every corner?

Imagine where you could be if you didn’t give in to the constant tugging of rejection.

As much as children are guided by us and our example, we can learn a thing or two from them.

Put on that tutu and tights and strike a pose. Step into the spotlight.

Dream! Dance!
