Yvette Hess is a 34 year old, a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in Mosselbay. She was born in the Western Cape, but her upbringing in the Free State in the 90’s influenced much of her identity, in navigating being an “other”, a young coloured girl in a then racially charged environment.
She excelled academically and in numerous cultural groups like the Voortrekkers, an Afrikaner youth organization. As art was not encouraged, she pursued accountancy, information systems and auditing. Yvette’s art journey began after one of her hospitalizations for manic depressive episodes, when her therapist encouraged her to create a space and identity for herself.
Within a year of attending art classes, she initiated and co-created the first West Coast Art Fair which rotated over three towns, before she was hospitalized again.
Her story has been told by the Cape Times, Cape Argus, Heart FM, The South African Depression and Anxiety Group, Beautiful News SA, Klop on kykNET, the International Bipolar Foundation, and BPHope Magazine.
Her 2018 and 2019 list of exhibitions includes her first solo show at the AVA gallery as part of their ArtReach program, the #ThincAfrica Hospitality conference at the Westin, Gallery MOMO in Cape Town (both group exhibitions with Not Another Collective- her brainchild) and the #Thatswhatshesaid female artist exhibition.
Her writing is documented extensively on her inaugural blog, Yve’s Corner, a collaborative mental health blog ‘Our Lived Experience’ and her current website and Instagram account.
She is mother to three boys and wife to an analytic husband.
