Yvette Hess -My contemporary art journey at the AVA gallery in Cape Town 2018

I want to tell you a bit of my journey this past week (which focuses on me exploring contemporary art in South Africa). But, let me provide you with a short, uncomplicated definition of what “contemporary art” is according to Wiki: Contemporary art is the art of today, produced in the late 20th century or in the 21st century. … Their art is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries and defy easy definition. That’s it. Why complicate it, right? A shift in art creation With my last blog post, I updated my readers about my sobriety journey. But I didn’t mention exactly what I’ve been up to artwise.…

What it feels like to be alcohol free – Sober for 227 days

When “they” ask “what it feels like to be alcohol free” When people ask  “what it feels like to be alcohol free”. I can immediately answer and say, “You already know. The last word you said says it all.” FREE. I am free of the chains. With my last post, I spoke about being a newbie alcoholic over the festive season. There was a brief guide there, so have a look if it may help. This post is more of an update. On my Instagram (@yvette_hess) I posted the image below. On this day, I celebrated being sober for 200 days So, go deep Yvette- is it really all that?…

Featuring Scott Eric WIlliams – Local Creatives in South Africa

Local creatives in South Africa – Introducing Scott Eric Williams One of the local creatives in South Africa I admire and look up to and who I have been promising to feature is Mr. Scott Eric Williams! He can be found on my Creative Colleagues page on my website. He’s an artist, photographer, illustrator (that’s the official stuff). But he is so much more. He has been an independent artist since November 2012 when he was retrenched. In addition, he has worked as a youth facilitator, arts administrator, and research assistant. He also freelanced in the creative industries while employed in the banking industry for 11 years.   He is a…

A round-up of my latest commissioned oil paintings – Yvette Hess Art

When you take on a commission, you’re initially filled with a sense of buzzing energy. When I do commissioned oil paintings, I like to get excited by the client’s story and of course, I think I’m invincible and tell myself things like: “You got this!” “Come on, of course, you can do that. Pshhhhhh.” The ego is in charge. What they don’t tell you about commissioned work It can be scary as hell when it’s time to show the client! Why? Because you had to create what the client expected or obviously exceed those expectations. And some clients don’t always explain themselves well, so just like a project team needs to…

Treating scalp psoriasis with a detox- What is a detox treatment?

“What is a detox treatment?” is something I’m asked often when I tell people that I’m on a medical detox to treat my scalp psoriasis. Sometimes I can sense they’re rolling their eyes on the inside, because “another detox, Yvette?!” Yes, another detox people! But this one is different. What is a detox treatment? When looking up medical detoxes, one sees an array of detoxes related drug and alcohol abuse. This particular detox treatment is not linked to those, but it wouldn’t be something I would shy away from. Even though I am 194 days sober today, and will be writing a bit about that too, I wanted to focus on…

Can art help with Depression? – my interpretation of surviving suicide

“Can art help with Depression?” was one of the first questions I asked myself when I was admitted for my very first hospitalization for a depressive episode a few years ago.  I couldn’t understand how painting or gluing things together would help me express, let alone allow me to deal with what was going wrong. Last week I posted one of my latest works entitled, “Come Away from the Edge”. It was one of those inspired works in the sense that pure emotion drove me to create it. I’m certain it’s happened to you! My irritability levels were sky high. So, I locked myself up in my studio and turned…

A guide to survive the festive season without alcohol- for the newbie alcoholic

This is my tried and tested guide to surviving the festive season without alcohol. How do I know it worked? I stayed sober! I think staying sober during the holidays is tough for anyone, but especially for those new to recovery. So, if you’re a newbie alcoholic, keep reading! You know that phase on your journey when people if you question if you really have a problem, and uhm, then you begin to question yourself too! Sometimes I wonder how the hell I survived. Why? Mainly because Christmas time is insanely stressful. So, to combat this, I try to plan everything beforehand. We set the venue, meal plan- all those…

3 months free from alcohol ROCKS – An Update

I’ve been 3 months free from alcohol. That’s right, 101 days! I find it hard to believe that I managed to last 3 months without alcohol. I say this because I know how deep in the doo-doo I was. I drank daily. But I hear that’s not the the only determining factor. According to Merriam-Webster, “alcoholism” is the ‘continued excessive or compulsive use of alcoholic drinks.’ They go further and throw around words like “neglect of physical appearance” and “chronic”, not forgetting “potentially fatal disorder”. Oh my. So scary! I felt that the definition was so scary that it immediately jolted me into denial. When I drank, it was sexy. Wasn’t it?…

    I’m NOT a soccer mom

This is a touchy subject for moms in general. I believe there’s space in this world for EVERY type of mother. Moms teach us, protect us and even smother us. More often than not, everything they do is out of love! So, in light of this huge aspect of mothering, namely love, I would argue that we are all EQUAL. We all are doing what we think is best for our children. No one can argue with that. Or can we? What is “the best” anyway? And what about what is best for us? You know, not as a mother but as a woman or an individual. Or is that…
