“Isn’t she lovely, isn’t she wonderful?”, a painting of gold ballet shoes is a rather large oil painting that captures the beauty of the life of a ballerina. This particular painting was the first time I attempted any ballet-related subject matter. The second attempt was “Pretty Little Me”, a miniature, more playful piece.
The story behind “Isn’t she Lovely, isn’t she Wonderful”
What makes this piece more special is that I took FOREVER to finish it! Those who know me are well aware that I allow short bursts of intensity to take over the creation process. This often results in paintings to fly out left, right and centre.
But this one started last year sometime.
For the first time, I tried a new technique and it confused the hell out of me. I took a photo of my work in progress and felt let down. So I put it “on ice” and by that, I mean I didn’t want to look at it. I avoided it for months and until one day, after a two-week depression episode, I decided to take it on again. I was fueled by an inexplicable energy, but this time the energy had some sort of direction.
I was feeling AND I was thinking.
I decided to approach it by directing the strokes and colours towards a fixed goal. And as I progressed, the shoes took form and had they possessed a certain type of character. Shoes with personality. Shoes with a story. Shoes with LIFE.
More than a painting of gold ballet shoes
Exactly what I wanted to bring to the painting: life.
I realized after posting the finished painting, that that is what many people connected with- the story that those shoes lived and they had many a story to tell.
The stories would revolve trying, again and again; painful learning and then, of course, those moments of absolutely graceful victories!
You can’t necessarily relate to the sport that is ballet dancing, but you can connect with those often dark times when we fail or uncomfortable times when we are undergoing learning and growth. But most of all these Gold Ballet shoes remind you of those wins, those victories. And as much as we learn and sometimes fall, we win too.
We do win.
So, aren’t you lovely? Aren’t YOU just wonderful? Ask Stevie Wonder!
